“You brought him back,” Kassandra whispered. She leaned on the wall outside Eddie’s room, her hands laced behind her back. “I felt his distress through our bond. Seems like you handled it just fine, though.”

“I hope so.” Vicenzo was chatting in the room with Ben right now. He’d followed Kassandra upstairs when she’d sensed Vico’s distress.

Kassandra smiled. “After all this time, you still speak to his wolf.”

Eddie sighed. It seemed that way, but Vicenzo’s true feelings for him were so much more complex than they once were. “I can’t tell if he loves me or hates me.”

Kassandra laughed softly. “He lies to himself. It’s how he keeps himself safe. He’s afraid of failing the pack, so he convinces himself you all would be better off without him. He’s afraid of you, too. Hurting you, or being hurt by you, maybe both. So he puts up a front.”

Eddie’s chest tightened. He didn’t remember much about the night Vicenzo had come for him. His mind had been in such disarray. But he would never forget the devastation on Vicenzo’s face when Eddie had ordered him away. “I hurt him. I’m trying, but he won’t let me make it up to him.”

“He still cares about you,” Kassandra said. “You’ve pulled him from the darkness twice now, Eddie. Don’t let him push you away. Trust me, if he truly didn’t want to be here, if your presence was so unbearable, he would have left a long time ago.”

She was right; Eddie knew it. He just wished he knew how to earn back all the trust there once was between them.

The door opened and Ben stepped out alone.

“Is he all right?” Kassandra asked.

“Resting. Seems like he needs it. But I told him no more locking himself in his room. He’s not a teenager. I’ll put him to work around the estate, keep him nice and busy. And I said if he eats dinner alone, we’ll all come in and eat with him. He needs to tether himself to this pack.”

“He knows.” Kassandra sighed. “My brother’s just a stubborn fool.”

Ben rolled his shoulders and cracked his back. “Let him rest. Pretty sure they should be about ready to serve the cake by now.”

Kassandra sighed dreamily. “I could so go for cake right now.”

“You and me both.”

Eddie stayed behind since returning to the party didn’t hold much appeal. He eased open the door to check on his mate. He lay beneath the blankets, facing away from the door. Eddie slipped inside, the carpet whispering under his feet, and went and sat on the side of Vicenzo’s bed.

Darkness blinded him, so he leaned backwards until his back found Vicenzo’s. If Vicenzo was awake, he didn’t ask Eddie to leave or acknowledge him in any way. They lay there in the darkness together and just breathed.

Eddie said, “I won’t push you away, Vico. Not again. I swear it.”

If Vicenzo heard him, he said nothing. Eddie closed his eyes and sat in the dark with him for a long, long time.
